The Havana Lefties and San Francisco Missions have come to agreement on a trade involving the currently-up '66 draft pick.
the Missions' first rounder in '66 and 3B Paul 'Wendy' Schaal
for
the Lefties' first rounder in '66, infielders Jerry Lumpe and Ike Brown, and pitcher Phil Ortega
A former first-round pick, Lumpy has spent ten years contributing to Havana. He has a .670 OPS in about 2,000 PA as a defensive standout around the infield, playing mostly part-time as a sort of deluxe utility infielder. His best season came in 1957 when the lefty served as our platoon third baseman and batted over .300 This year, he again took over as platoon 3B after Tony Kubek's horrible back injury. His sharp-minded and affable presence will be missed and always welcomed back in Cuba.
Infield prospect Brown and starting pitcher prospect 'Kemo' Ortega are nearly ready to break through to the majors with their new club, and we wish them the best on their new coast.
While laden with uncertainty about this iffy thing called the knuckle ball, and concerned about his control, and realizing we might wind up as happy with the player we'd get at slot #13, Havana will draft Hawaiian/Floridian teenage pitching prospect Charles Oliver Hough out of Hialeah High School. He doesn't look that special in blue jeans, but he's already got the kind of make-up we like to find.
